It is not impossible to list all bees, hornet and wasp species but here are few of them:
(you are more than welcome to add to this list)
Bees, Hornets and Wasps are of concern because of their abundance around the many flowering plants of yards and because they can sting. If bees nest is located in or close to an occupied structure or recreational area, then control is warranted.
Many bee, hornets and wasp species are considered beneficial insects because they pollinate the flowers of many plants species and by helping to control many pest insect species.
If you want “your” nest removed, you should search 1001Mouse for your local “pest control” services.
Bees:
There are about 51 bee species, 45 in Bombus and 6 in Psithyrus in the US and Canada.
Name: Bumble bee
Family: Bombus spp. / Psithyrus spp.
Scientific name: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Apidae
Bumble bees are social insects which live in nests or colonies.
Name: Carpenter bee
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Anthophoridae
Scientific name: Xyloccpa spp.
Carpenter bee are not social insects and do not live in nests or colonies.
Name: Honey bee
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Apidae
Scientific name: Apis mellifera Linnaeus
Honey bees are social insects and live in nests or colonies. They are not aggressive and do not search for something to attack.
Name: Solitary ground or cavity nesting bees
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Andrenidae, Colletidae, Halctidae
Scientific name:
These bees are solitary and not social bees, they usually nest in ground or natural cavities. They can sting and can become nuisance when they nest in large numbers near structures.
Hornets:
Name: Baldfaced hornet
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Vespidae
Scientific name: Dolichoespula maculate (Linnaeus)
Baldfaced hornets are about 5/8-3/4” (15-20mm) long and are in the beneficial insect grub.
Name: European Hornet
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Vespidae
Scientific name: Vespa crabro Linnaeus
European Hornets are about 3/4-3/8” (20-35mm) long, are social insect and live in colonies or nests. European Hornets are among the beneficial insects grub.
Wasps:
Name: Mud daubers
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Sphecidae
Scientific name: Few species belong to those wasps.
Mud daubers ½-1+” (12-25mm) are solitary wasps and are usually a nuisance pest and makes their nest of mud.
Name: Velvet ants (are in fact wasps)
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Multillidae
Scientific name: There are few species.
Velvet ants (wasps ) 1/8-7/8” (3-23mm) Females are wingless and hairy but mails has wings and are solitary wasps.
Name: Digger or scoliid wasps.
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Scoliidae
Scientific name: There are 20 or more species.
Digger or scoliid wasps ¾-2” (20-50mm) are solitary wasps and they rarely sting people.
Name: Mason and potter wasps.
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Vespidae
Scientific name: There are few species
Mason and potter wasps 3/8-3/4” (10-20mm) make their pot-like nest or mud nest. These wasp are not aggressive and rarely sting people.
Name: Paper wasps.
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Vespidae
Scientific name: Polistes spp.
Paper wasps 5/8-3/4 (16-20mm) are semi-social and their nests can hardly been seen when in trees.
Name: Spider wasps.
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Pompilidae
Scientific name: There are few species.
Spider wasps ¼-1 ¾ (5-45mm) are solitary wasps and can usually been found on ground or on flowers searching for spiders.
Name: Wood wasp or horntails
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Siricidae
Scientific name: There are 19 or more species.
Wood wasp or horntails ½-5/8” (12-40mm) their larvae bore in wood. Are not common pest in structure nor do they cause a great deal of structural damage.
Name: Yellowjackets
Family: Insecta / Hymenoptera / Vespidae
Scientific name: Vespula spp. , Dolichovespula spp. There are few species.
Yellowjackets 3/8-5/8” (10-16mm) respective queen about 25% longer. Yellowjackets are social insects and live in nest or colonies. |
